Everyone needs to feel loved playing for England – Bellingham
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

England midfielder Jude Bellingham has highlighted the importance of emotional connection within the squad as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup, emphasizing that every player must feel valued and supported in order to achieve success on football’s biggest stage.

The tournament, being hosted across North America, officially began on Thursday, with Mexico—one of the host nations alongside the United States and Canada—securing a 2-0 victory over South Africa. England, however, will not begin their campaign until next Wednesday, when they face Croatia in Arlington, Texas.

Bellingham, who played a significant role in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 final, is determined to use past experiences to improve the team’s chances this time around. England ultimately fell short in that final, losing to Spain, and their overall performances during the tournament were often criticized despite progressing deep into the competition.

Reflecting on that period, Bellingham acknowledged that there were issues within the squad that went beyond what happened on the pitch. While expectations were high due to England’s strong performances in previous tournaments—such as reaching the semi-finals in 2018 and delivering a solid showing at the 2022 World Cup—the pressure seemed to have a negative impact on the team’s cohesion.

According to Bellingham, the group struggled to fully connect during Euro 2024. He believes that this lack of unity affected both their performances and the overall atmosphere within the squad. Even in moments of success, such as winning matches, there was a sense that the team was not enjoying the experience as much as they should have.

The midfielder admitted that expectations played a major role in this dynamic. Being considered one of the favorites to win the tournament created an environment where results were expected rather than celebrated. As a result, victories did not bring the same level of satisfaction, and the pressure to perform consistently at a high level became overwhelming.

Bellingham also revealed that he personally felt the weight of criticism during that tournament. At times, he believed he had been unfairly singled out as a scapegoat for England’s failure to secure the title. This experience has shaped his perspective and reinforced his belief in the importance of maintaining a positive and supportive team environment.

Looking ahead to the World Cup, Bellingham is confident that the current squad has learned valuable lessons from the past. He notes that there is a noticeably different atmosphere within the camp, with players showing greater unity and understanding. The focus now is not only on winning but also on enjoying the journey and supporting one another.

He stressed that while a competitive mindset is essential, it is equally important to appreciate moments of success and maintain a sense of balance. In football, victories can quickly fade from memory as attention shifts to the next challenge. Bellingham believes that taking time to celebrate achievements can help build confidence and strengthen team morale.

Another key point he emphasized is the unpredictability of football. In major tournaments, unexpected players often emerge as heroes, and success is rarely determined by a single individual. This reality underscores the need for every member of the squad to feel important and ready to contribute when called upon.

Bellingham’s message is clear: a successful team is one where every player feels “loved” and valued. This sense of belonging can enhance performance and create a stronger collective spirit. He believes that fostering such an environment will be crucial if England are to go all the way in the World Cup.

His teammate Morgan Rogers echoed these sentiments, highlighting the strong sense of unity within the current squad. Rogers described the group as highly inclusive, where players from different backgrounds, clubs, and age groups come together seamlessly. This level of cohesion makes it easier for individuals to integrate into the team and perform at their best.

The positive atmosphere within the camp is seen as a major strength for England as they aim to end their long wait for World Cup glory. The team has not lifted the trophy since 1966, and there is a strong desire among players and fans alike to finally bring it home.

Competition for places within the squad remains intense, particularly in attacking positions. Rogers himself is competing with Bellingham for the number 10 role, yet he emphasized that this rivalry does not disrupt the harmony within the team. Instead, it motivates players to improve while maintaining mutual respect and support.

The blend of competition and camaraderie is viewed as a key factor in England’s preparation. Players are pushing each other to reach higher levels while also ensuring that the team remains united. This balance could prove decisive in a tournament where fine margins often determine outcomes.

As England prepares for their opening match against Croatia, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the squad. The lessons learned from previous tournaments, combined with a renewed focus on unity and enjoyment, have created a positive outlook.

Bellingham’s leadership, both on and off the pitch, will be instrumental in guiding the team through the challenges ahead. His experiences, despite his relatively young age, have given him valuable insights into what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Ultimately, England’s chances of winning the World Cup will depend on their ability to translate this unity into performances on the field. While talent and tactics are crucial, the emotional connection within the squad could be the defining factor.

If the team can maintain a supportive environment where every player feels valued, they may be able to overcome the pressures that have hindered them in the past. With a strong sense of togetherness and a determination to enjoy the experience, England will be aiming to make history and claim their first World Cup title in nearly six decades.
