Antonelli says he still has questions to answer
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Kimi Antonelli, the young and rapidly rising star of Formula 1, has insisted that he still has much to demonstrate despite making a sensational start to the current season. Driving for Mercedes, the 19-year-old Italian has quickly established himself as a serious championship contender, building a commanding lead after just six races. However, Antonelli remains grounded, acknowledging that his journey is far from complete and that there are still many aspects of his performance and development that need to be proven over time.

Antonelli’s remarkable form has seen him win five of the opening six grands prix, placing him 66 points ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in the standings. Such dominance at such a young age has naturally drawn widespread attention and praise, but Antonelli is keen to maintain perspective. He has openly questioned how much further he can push himself, how quickly he can continue to evolve, and what his true limits might be in the highly competitive world of Formula 1.

Reflecting on his progress, Antonelli admitted that his rookie season last year played a crucial role in shaping the driver he is today. During that campaign, he experienced a difficult phase, particularly in the middle of the season, where he struggled with pace and was involved in several on-track incidents. At the time, these setbacks dented his confidence, leading him to question his abilities. However, with the benefit of hindsight, he now views that challenging period as a turning point in his career.

According to Antonelli, those struggles allowed him to better understand himself both as a driver and as an individual. He explained that going through adversity helped him identify his weaknesses, learn how to respond under pressure, and ultimately grow stronger. While it was a tough experience at the time, he now appreciates the lessons it taught him and believes it has contributed significantly to his current success.

The contrast between last season and this year is striking. Antonelli highlighted how much he has matured in just one year, noting that experience in Formula 1 extends beyond driving skills alone. It also involves understanding race weekends, managing energy levels, working effectively with the team, and adapting to different track conditions. All these factors, he said, have played a vital role in his improved performance this season.

In 2025, Antonelli finished seventh in the championship standings, trailing his Mercedes team-mate George Russell by three positions and 169 points. Russell enjoyed a stronger campaign, securing two race victories, while Antonelli’s best results were podium finishes in Canada, Brazil, and Las Vegas. In qualifying, Antonelli was outperformed by Russell for much of the season, highlighting the gap that existed between the two drivers at the time.

This year, however, the dynamic within the team has shifted. Antonelli has taken a clear step forward, not only in race results but also in qualifying performance. He currently leads Russell 5-4 in their head-to-head qualifying battles, with an average advantage of just over a tenth of a second. This improvement reflects his growing confidence and deeper understanding of both the car and the demands of Formula 1 racing.

Meanwhile, Russell has endured a more challenging start to the season. Despite winning the opening race, he has struggled with consistency and has been affected by a series of setbacks, including a problematic pit stop and subsequent penalty in Monaco. Russell himself has acknowledged difficulties in extracting maximum performance from the car, suggesting that Antonelli’s advantage is not solely down to luck.

Despite his strong position in the championship, Antonelli insists that he is not allowing the pressure to affect him. He emphasized that while he is aware of the opportunity in front of him, he prefers not to focus on the title race at this stage. Instead, his approach is centered on continuous improvement, enjoying each race weekend, and delivering his best performance without overthinking the bigger picture.

Antonelli’s mindset appears to be one of balance and focus. By concentrating on the process rather than the outcome, he believes he can maintain consistency and avoid unnecessary pressure. This approach has served him well so far, enabling him to perform at a high level while continuing to learn and develop.

Russell, on the other hand, has adopted a more relaxed attitude given the current standings. He admitted that with more favorable circumstances, he might have been closer to Antonelli in the championship. However, he also acknowledged that the gap is now significant enough that he is no longer focusing on the title. Instead, he plans to enjoy the races, perform to the best of his ability, and make the most of the remainder of the season.

Antonelli’s performances have not gone unnoticed by some of the biggest names in Formula 1. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso described the young Italian as an “incredible talent,” praising his ability to handle a dominant car and win races without making mistakes. Alonso also highlighted the challenge of leading a championship, noting that maintaining performance under such pressure is a significant achievement in itself.

Similarly, four-time world champion Max Verstappen expressed admiration for Antonelli’s consistency and maturity at such a young age. Verstappen pointed out that making mistakes is a natural part of a driver’s development, particularly in their early seasons, but emphasized that Antonelli has done an excellent job of learning from those experiences. He also stressed the importance of staying true to oneself and focusing on personal growth rather than comparing oneself to others.

As the season progresses, Antonelli’s primary challenge will be to maintain his current level of performance while continuing to develop as a driver. With a strong lead in the championship and growing confidence, he is well-positioned to achieve great success. However, as he himself acknowledges, there are still many questions to be answered and many opportunities for further improvement.

Ultimately, Antonelli’s journey is a testament to the importance of resilience, self-belief, and continuous learning in Formula 1. His rapid rise to the top of the sport has been impressive, but his willingness to remain humble and focused suggests that this may only be the beginning of what could be an extraordinary career.
