British Qualifier Arthur Fery Secures Historic Australian Open Main Draw Spot

In a spirited qualifying victory, Britain’s Arthur Fery has secured his place in the main draw of an overseas Grand Slam for the first time, triumphing over Croatia’s Dino Prizmic at the Australian Open. The world number 185 showcased composure and skill to defeat his higher-ranked opponent 6-4, 6-1, navigating not only Prizmic’s game but also a boisterous and at times feisty crowd supporting the Croat.

The 23-year-old, a former Stanford University student, credited his experience in the intense atmosphere of US college tennis for helping him maintain focus. “It was getting a bit feisty today in the crowd,” Fery remarked. “I’m used to it… I was actually very happy with how I dealt with it today because it could have got to me.”

This milestone marks a significant step in Fery’s career, following his three previous Grand Slam appearances which were all at Wimbledon. His most notable achievement came there last year, where he scored his first major match win against 20th seed Alexei Popyrin. Overcoming past challenges, including a persistent bone bruise in his upper arm—an injury similar to the one currently sidelining British number one Jack Draper—Fery expressed pride in qualifying on his own ranking. “It was a big milestone for me… having qualified brings a lot of joy to me and pride,” he said. “I know I have it in me to play really good tennis, it’s just a matter of staying healthy and delivering on the court.”

While Fery celebrated his success, compatriot George Loffhagen fell just short, losing in a tight three-set match to American Nishesh Basavareddy. Fery now joins fellow Britons Cameron Norrie and Jacob Fearnley in the men’s singles main draw. On the women’s side, Emma Raducanu headlines a quartet of British players that includes Francesca Jones, Sonay Kartal, and Katie Boulter. Raducanu, however, faces a daunting potential third-round match against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, underscoring the challenging paths ahead for all British contenders.

Fery’s qualification is a testament to his resilience and growing prowess on the international stage. As he awaits his first-round opponent, his journey will be one to watch for British tennis fans hopeful for a deep run in Melbourne.
