‘I’m proud of my heritage’ – meet Britain’s youngest F1 driver

Arvid Lindblad’s excitement is unmistakable as he reflects on the life-changing moment of becoming a Formula 1 driver. The 18-year-old British talent, who is set to make history as the youngest ever Formula 1 driver from Britain, sits calmly on a beach in Bahrain as the early morning haze drifts across the horizon. Just a short drive away lies the circuit where he and his team are finalising preparations for his highly anticipated debut at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in March. Although naturally cautious in interviews and aware of the weight of every word he speaks at such a pivotal stage of his career, Lindblad’s composure softens when asked about the highlight of his journey so far. A quiet smile appears as he admits that the greatest moment since stepping into the world of Formula 1 has simply been achieving the dream itself.

The confirmation of his promotion came during the penultimate round of the Formula 2 championship at the Qatar Grand Prix. The news was delivered by Helmut Marko, the influential Red Bull motorsport advisor and former Formula 1 driver who had identified Lindblad’s potential years earlier. Marko had brought him into the Red Bull junior programme when he was only 13 years old, recognising his talent during his early karting career. Receiving the call while in Qatar alongside his father made the moment even more emotional, turning it into a milestone he will always cherish. Sharing such an achievement with the person who supported him from the very beginning made the experience deeply personal and unforgettable.

Lindblad admits that the reality of reaching Formula 1 still feels surreal at times. After dedicating nearly his entire life to chasing this ambition, the idea of finally being part of the sport’s elite grid is something he occasionally has to remind himself is real. His journey is not only significant from a sporting perspective but also culturally meaningful, as he represents a unique blend of British, Indian, and Swedish heritage in a sport that has historically lacked diversity.

His father, Stefan, is Swedish, while his mother, Anita, has Indian roots, giving Lindblad a rich multicultural background that he proudly embraces. The history of his maternal family is especially profound, shaped by the events of the 1947 partition of India. His grandparents, who were originally from Punjab in a region that later became part of Pakistan, were forced to leave their home at a young age. Despite coming from comfortable beginnings, they lost everything during that turbulent period and had to rebuild their lives through resilience and determination. Eventually, they relocated to the United Kingdom in their late twenties and early thirties, both pursuing careers as doctors and establishing a new future through hard work and perseverance.

Growing up, Lindblad was surrounded by strong cultural influences from all sides of his heritage. His grandparents maintained many traditional Indian customs, including religious practices, food, and family rituals, which played a major role in shaping his upbringing. At the same time, he remained closely connected to his Swedish roots through his father’s side of the family. He acknowledges that this blend of cultures has significantly contributed to his identity and outlook on life, instilling values such as humility, discipline, and respect from an early age. While he has been exposed to multiple languages, he openly admits that he is still working on improving his proficiency in both Swedish and Hindi, recognising language as an important way to honour and connect with his heritage.

Motorsport, however, entered his life primarily through his father’s family. His grandfather was a passionate fan of anything involving speed and engines, and that enthusiasm filtered down through generations. Lindblad’s father had a brief involvement in motocross during his youth and later passed that love for racing onto his son. When Lindblad was just three years old, he was introduced to motocross, although that phase was short-lived due to safety concerns. It wasn’t long before he discovered karting at the age of five, an experience that immediately captured his imagination and set him on the path that would ultimately lead to Formula 1.

One of his earliest and most vivid memories involves watching Formula 1 races with his father at home. At around four years old, he became fascinated by the cars and the spectacle of the sport, asking whether it was possible for someone like him to one day race at that level. That moment sparked a powerful ambition, and from then on, his focus became unwavering. Even as a child, he believed he could reach Formula 1, a level of confidence that, while bold, became the driving force behind years of relentless effort and sacrifice.

Raised in Virginia Water in Surrey, Lindblad acknowledges that his relatively comfortable upbringing gave him opportunities that are not accessible to many aspiring racers. Motorsport is notoriously expensive, and he is quick to express gratitude for the financial and emotional support provided by his family. His mother’s side of the family instilled a strong work ethic, influenced by the struggles and determination of his grandparents. His grandmother continued working as a doctor well into her eighties, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to perseverance and discipline. Similarly, his father’s story of growing up in a small Swedish village, where resources were limited and hard work was essential from a young age, deeply shaped the values passed down to Lindblad.

These family influences, he says, are the foundation of his mindset today. He emphasises that while talent is crucial in motorsport, dedication, humility, and consistent effort are equally important. He considers himself fortunate not only to have the financial backing necessary to compete but also to come from a household where strong values and a relentless work ethic were always emphasised.

Lindblad’s rise through the ranks of motorsport has been remarkably fast. After spending seven years in karting and securing multiple international titles, he transitioned into single-seater racing in 2022 at just 15 years old. Under the guidance of the Red Bull development system, he rapidly progressed through Formula 4, Formula 3, and Formula 2 in consecutive years. His consistent performances and maturity behind the wheel convinced the Red Bull leadership that he was ready for the step up to Formula 1 far earlier than most drivers.

Now part of the Racing Bulls setup, Lindblad is undergoing intense preparation during pre-season testing in Bahrain. The team has been working closely with him on simulator sessions and track evaluations to ensure he adapts quickly to the demands of Formula 1 machinery, especially with new regulation changes adding complexity to the cars. Multiple testing sessions this season have provided him with valuable time to familiarise himself with the vehicle and refine his performance ahead of his debut race in Melbourne.

Team principal Alan Permane has spoken highly of Lindblad’s development, highlighting not only his speed but also his inquisitive nature and professionalism. According to Permane, the young driver consistently asks detailed questions, provides thoughtful feedback during debrief sessions, and demonstrates the level of focus required to succeed at the highest level of motorsport. These qualities, combined with his natural pace, suggest a strong foundation for his future in the sport.

Despite the immense expectations that come with driving in Formula 1, Lindblad insists he does not feel overwhelmed by pressure. Instead, he views this opportunity as the natural culmination of years of dedication. Rather than focusing on external expectations, his priority remains understanding the car, building strong relationships with his engineers, and extracting the maximum performance from the package as quickly as possible.

He recognises that Formula 1 is an unforgiving environment where results are paramount and opportunities can be short-lived, particularly within the Red Bull driver system, which is known for its competitive and demanding standards. However, instead of seeing this as a source of stress, he embraces it as motivation. For Lindblad, reaching Formula 1 is not the end goal but the beginning of a new chapter, one where continuous improvement and adaptability will determine his longevity in the sport.

As he prepares to line up on the grid for the first time, the sense of anticipation is matched by a grounded perspective shaped by family history, cultural identity, and years of disciplined effort. His journey from a karting-obsessed child watching races with his father to a fully-fledged Formula 1 driver reflects not only talent but also resilience and belief. With a unique heritage, strong values, and the backing of one of the sport’s most influential development programmes, Lindblad enters Formula 1 carrying both personal pride and the hopes of a new generation of diverse motorsport fans.
