Italian Pavan seriously hurt after lift shaft fall

Italian golfer Andrea Pavan has revealed he faces an extended period of rehabilitation and recovery after suffering a devastating accident ahead of the South African Open. The 36-year-old fell multiple floors down an open lift shaft at his accommodation near Stellenbosch Golf Club, sustaining serious injuries that required major surgery.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, just before the tournament began. According to reports, Pavan was staying at private lodging close to the course when the lift doors opened, but the elevator car was not present in the shaft. Unaware of the danger, he stepped forward and fell three stories down the empty shaft. The sudden and severe accident left him with significant trauma, particularly to his shoulder and back.

Emergency services transported Pavan to a local hospital in South Africa, where medical examinations revealed extensive damage. Doctors diagnosed severe shoulder injuries and fractures to several vertebrae in his spine. The seriousness of the injuries necessitated major surgical intervention, and he has since undergone an operation aimed at stabilizing his condition and preventing further complications.

In a statement released through the DP World Tour, Pavan expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received. While acknowledging the severity of the situation, he remained optimistic about his recovery journey.

“The past two days have been difficult, but I am in very good hands,” Pavan said. He added that the care provided by medical professionals has been exceptional and that the messages and visits from fellow players, caddies, and staff have meant a great deal during a challenging time. “To have so many players, caddies and staff visit and contact me has meant a lot to me,” he shared.

Initially, tournament officials had only announced that Pavan had withdrawn from the South African Open due to injury. No further details were provided at the time, with organizers citing medical confidentiality. It was only later that the full extent of the accident became public knowledge, shocking the golfing community.

The recovery process is expected to be lengthy. Matt van Zandt, a former teammate of Pavan, has organized a fundraiser to support Pavan’s wife, Audra, and their three children as they face mounting medical expenses. Van Zandt indicated that doctors anticipate Pavan will need to remain in South Africa for several weeks before he can even be evaluated for travel back to the United States, where his family resides.

The news has drawn heartfelt reactions from across the sport. English golfer Marco Penge, who competes alongside Pavan on the DP World Tour, posted a message of support on social media, describing the accident as “terrible news” and sending his love to Pavan and his family. The sentiment has been echoed by many players who know Pavan not only as a competitor but as a respected and well-liked figure on tour.

Pavan’s career has included notable achievements on the European circuit. He is a two-time DP World Tour champion, having secured victory at the Czech Masters in 2018 and the BMW International Open in 2019. Those wins marked high points in a professional journey defined by persistence and steady progression through the ranks.

Turning professional in the early 2010s after a successful amateur career, Pavan steadily established himself as a consistent presence on the European-based tour. His triumph at the Czech Masters was particularly memorable, as he edged out strong competition to claim his maiden title. The following year’s success at the BMW International Open further cemented his reputation as a capable contender under pressure.

This latest setback, however, represents one of the most significant challenges of his life—both personally and professionally. Spinal fractures and major shoulder damage are injuries that require careful management, particularly for a golfer whose sport demands rotational strength, balance, and precise upper-body control. Rehabilitation will likely involve months of physical therapy, strength rebuilding, and gradual reintegration into physical activity.

Medical professionals will prioritize spinal stability and healing before considering any return to competitive sport. Even once cleared for travel and discharged from hospital care, Pavan’s road back to full fitness is expected to be long and demanding. For elite athletes, such recoveries involve not only physical repair but also psychological resilience.

Despite the gravity of the accident, early updates suggest that Pavan remains in stable condition following surgery. His positive outlook and gratitude toward supporters reflect his determination to approach recovery with the same discipline he has shown throughout his golfing career.

The golfing world has often rallied around players during moments of hardship, and this situation is no exception. The support network within the DP World Tour community has been evident, with fellow professionals offering assistance and encouragement. Fundraising efforts aim to ease the financial strain associated with prolonged hospitalization abroad, specialized medical care, and the eventual logistics of returning home.

While the South African Open proceeds without him, Pavan’s absence is deeply felt. The tournament, one of the historic events on the calendar, began on Thursday as scheduled. Yet conversations around the event have frequently returned to the well-being of the Italian golfer whose season was abruptly interrupted.

Looking ahead, the timeline for Pavan’s return to professional golf remains uncertain. Recovery from vertebral fractures can vary widely depending on severity and response to treatment. Doctors will closely monitor healing progress before allowing travel, and any athletic comeback would only be considered after full medical clearance.

For now, the focus remains firmly on recovery and family. Messages of support continue to pour in from across the sporting world, underscoring the respect Pavan commands among peers and fans alike. His resilience on the course has been a hallmark of his career, and that same resilience will now be required in his rehabilitation journey.

As the weeks unfold, updates on his condition will be closely followed. What is clear is that Andrea Pavan faces a demanding period of rehab and hard work—but with the backing of his family, colleagues, and the wider golf community, he is not facing it alone.
