Joshua pays emotional tribute in new video

Former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has shared an emotional video message thanking fans around the world for their overwhelming support following the tragic deaths of two of his closest friends in a fatal car crash late last year.

The 36-year-old British boxer described the video as a “short message from the heart”, using it as an opportunity to reflect on the devastating loss of Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, who both died in the accident in Nigeria on 29 December. Joshua himself was involved in the crash and sustained minor injuries, but survived the incident.

The accident occurred on a major road near Lagos, where the vehicle carrying Joshua, Ghami and Ayodele collided with a stationary truck. The impact was severe, and emergency services pronounced Ghami and Ayodele dead at the scene. Images later circulated showing Joshua being assisted from the wreckage, visibly shaken but conscious.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Joshua remained largely silent in public as he took time to process the loss. However, in a six-minute video posted on his social media platforms, the heavyweight star broke his silence to acknowledge the outpouring of love he has received from fans, fellow athletes, and supporters across the globe.

Speaking directly to the camera, Joshua thanked everyone who reached out during what he described as a “tragic and traumatic time”. He said the messages, prayers and support had meant more to him than words could express, helping him through a period of profound grief and emotional pain.

Joshua explained that while he has experienced loss before, this situation felt different. Ghami and Ayodele were not just friends but people he considered family — men who had been by his side through key moments of his life and career. Their sudden deaths, he said, left a void that is difficult to comprehend.

“I’ve lost people before,” Joshua said in the video, “but I don’t think I’ve lost people like that — my left and my right.” The phrase highlighted just how close the two men were to him, both personally and emotionally.

In one of the most striking moments of the message, Joshua spoke candidly about mortality and his own outlook on life and death following the crash. He admitted that surviving the accident had forced him to confront difficult thoughts, but also brought him a sense of peace.

“One day my time will come, and I’m not scared at all,” he said. “It’s actually comforting knowing I’ve got two brothers on the other side.”

Those words resonated deeply with fans, many of whom praised Joshua for his honesty, vulnerability and emotional strength. Known throughout his career for his physical power and mental resilience inside the ring, Joshua showed a more reflective and human side as he spoke openly about grief, faith and acceptance.

The boxer also acknowledged how surreal it felt to be alive after such a serious crash. While he escaped with only minor injuries, he made it clear that the psychological impact of the event would stay with him for a long time. He described the experience as life-altering and said it had reshaped his priorities.

Joshua did not go into detail about his boxing future during the video, choosing instead to focus on gratitude and remembrance. However, those close to the fighter suggest he has taken time away from training to recover mentally and emotionally before making any decisions about his next steps in the sport.

Tributes to Ghami and Ayodele have continued to pour in since the incident, with many describing them as loyal friends and positive influences in Joshua’s life. Fans and members of the boxing community have also expressed admiration for the way Joshua has handled the tragedy publicly.

Throughout the video, Joshua repeatedly returned to the theme of appreciation — for life, for love, and for the people who stand by you in the darkest moments. He emphasized that the support he received reminded him how connected people can be, even across borders and cultures.

The incident has also sparked renewed conversations about road safety in Nigeria, particularly concerning stationary vehicles on major highways. While investigations into the crash have been ongoing, Joshua avoided speculation, choosing instead to focus on healing and honoring the memory of his friends.

As one of the most recognizable figures in global boxing, Joshua’s message reached millions within hours of being posted. Fans praised him not only for his achievements in the ring but for his humility and openness during a deeply personal crisis.

In closing, Joshua reiterated his gratitude and urged supporters to value the people around them. His message served as a reminder that even elite athletes, often seen as invincible, are not immune to loss, pain and heartbreak.
