Lakers’ Doncic hits triple double in 20 minutes

The Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines got off to an exciting start as former world number one Justin Rose set the early pace with a scintillating round of 10-under-par 62. Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka made a highly anticipated return to the PGA Tour after leaving the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series, shooting 73 in his first round back on American soil.

Rose, who was playing on the North Course alongside several strong competitors, produced a masterclass in scoring with ten birdies and a flawless approach to the greens. The 45-year-old Englishman, who had struggled in recent tournaments and missed the cut at last week’s American Express, said he felt completely in control of his game. “I feel like I managed my game really, really well today,” Rose said. “I felt like I read the greens phenomenally, putted – as you could see – really, really well.” His precise iron play and solid putting enabled him to finish one shot ahead of American Justin Lower, who also had an impressive first round on the North Course.

Justin Lower, ranked 173rd in the world, had faced challenges in maintaining his PGA Tour status, having lost his full card last year. His entry into the Farmers Insurance Open came courtesy of a withdrawal, giving him a rare opportunity to compete. Despite personal distractions – his wife is 34 weeks pregnant with twins – Lower demonstrated composure and skill, producing two eagles to finish one stroke behind Rose. Reflecting on his performance, he admitted that his mind was partly elsewhere due to family commitments, stating, “I’m just trying to get home on Monday to try to help everything out as much as I can.” Nevertheless, his round showcased his ability to handle pressure and capitalize on scoring opportunities at a high-level tournament.

For Brooks Koepka, the tournament held extra significance. The five-time major champion had spent the past few years competing in the lucrative LIV Golf series in Saudi Arabia, but left the organization at the end of 2025 after negotiating a release from his contract. The PGA Tour swiftly introduced a Returning Members Programme, allowing him to rejoin the tour and compete once again against the world’s top players. Koepka, playing on the South Course, experienced a warm reception from fans eager to see him back in action. “The fans were awesome today,” Koepka said. “It was very cool to hear ‘welcome back.’ It was pretty much every hole, which is great. I loved to hear it, and I’m excited for the next few days.”

Although Koepka struggled to find momentum early in his round, failing to make a birdie until his final hole, his return was filled with optimism and renewed enthusiasm for the sport. The American admitted that stepping away from the game for a period allowed him to rediscover his love for golf. “I think I’ve fallen back in love with the game,” Koepka said. “Honestly, watching my son play a little bit and wanting to be able to see him watch me, or I guess want him to watch me play well and realise how much this game’s given me, how fun it is, and how cool it is to just be out here.” His comments reflect both a personal and professional motivation to reignite his career and embrace the challenges of high-level competition once more.

The leaderboard at the conclusion of the first round highlighted a highly competitive field. Rose’s 10-under-par 62 put him in the lead, followed closely by Lower at 9-under, with Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and American Matt Greyserman at 8-under. Other notable performances came from Seamus Power of Ireland, Matthew McNealy of the United States, and Sebastian Jaeger of Germany, all finishing at 7-under. Additional players in contention included Miguel Rozo of Colombia, Kristoffer Ventura of Norway, and Matt Hubbard of the United States, all scoring 6-under-par. This spread underscores the high level of competition and the potential for dramatic shifts in the leaderboard over the coming rounds.

Rose’s performance was particularly noteworthy considering the pressures of maintaining consistency over a long career. Having been at the top of the game for several years, the Englishman demonstrated the technical skill and mental fortitude necessary to produce such a remarkable score at Torrey Pines, a course known for its challenging layout and fast greens. His round included a series of precise drives, well-calculated approaches, and aggressive putting that combined to produce a round that could serve as a benchmark for the remainder of the tournament.

Justin Lower’s performance was equally impressive given his circumstances. Entering the tournament without a full PGA Tour card and with major personal commitments, his ability to record two eagles and remain in contention demonstrates his resilience and potential to achieve more in the coming days. The mental toughness required to manage both professional and personal pressures at the highest level of golf cannot be overstated.

Koepka’s return adds another dimension to the tournament. Known for his powerful driving and competitive mentality, he remains a major threat on any course when he regains his rhythm. His experience and ability to handle pressure in high-stakes situations make him a formidable contender, and fans will be watching closely to see how he develops his form over the next few rounds. The emotional significance of his comeback, combined with the support of spectators, sets the stage for a potentially remarkable story arc in the tournament.

As the Farmers Insurance Open progresses, all eyes will remain on the leaders and returning champions. Rose’s blistering start positions him favorably for a possible victory, while Lower and Matsuyama are likely to challenge for top honors. Koepka’s ongoing adjustment to tournament play will be closely observed, as his performance could inspire other returning members and influence the dynamics of the leaderboard.

The first round also highlighted the depth of international talent present at Torrey Pines, with multiple countries represented among the leaders. This diversity adds an exciting global element to the competition, showcasing how the PGA Tour continues to attract top golfers from around the world.

With the tournament now moving into its subsequent rounds, players will aim to maintain focus, adapt to changing course conditions, and respond strategically to the performances of their competitors. Every shot, putt, and decision will contribute to shaping the final outcomes, making the next few days critical for all those in contention.

The Farmers Insurance Open promises to deliver compelling storylines, with Rose seeking to build on his impressive start, Lower balancing personal and professional demands, and Koepka attempting to reassert himself among the sport’s elite. The stage is set for intense competition, memorable performances, and a potential resurgence for returning players, with the eyes of fans and the media keenly watching each round.
