Mason Rook earned a shot at the NXT Championship on Tuesday, September 15, winning a triple threat No. 1 contender’s match against Tony D’Angelo and Saquon Shugars in the main event of WWE NXT at the Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. Rook secured the victory with a Blue Thunder Bomb followed by a flying splash, with Tristan Angels interfering during the closing moments.
NXT Champion Grayson Waller came face to face with Rook after the match, setting up the next title bout. WWE has not yet announced a date for the championship match.
Elsewhere on the card, Kali Armstrong beat Lizzy Rain with the Kali Connection before being attacked by Skylar Raye, and DarkState’s Osiris Griffin and Cutler James defeated Sean Legacy and Dorian Van Dux with a double pop-up powerbomb after interference from Dion Lennox. The Vanity Project’s Brad Baylor and Ricky Smokes edged Cruz Montana and EK Prosper via a roll-up after Jackson Drake attacked Montana at ringside.
The night’s most dramatic moment came outside of competition, as Myles Borne offered an apology to former tag team partner Tavion Heights for his earlier attack, only to turn on him again once Heights accepted, hitting his Borne Again finisher and wrapping a steel chair around Heights’ ankle.
WWE also confirmed that the 14-team Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic returns on next week’s episode of NXT on Tuesday, September 22, with the bracket to be revealed on social media ahead of the show.
