Woods comparisons continue after Scheffler wins again

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one, has made an emphatic statement in the early stages of the PGA Tour season by claiming the American Express title in California, marking his 20th career PGA Tour victory. The triumph further solidifies his standing among the game’s modern elite and draws inevitable comparisons with legends such as Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Scheffler, 29, posted a commanding performance to finish on 27 under par, finishing four strokes ahead of a chasing pack that included American golfers Andrew Putnam, Matt McCarty, Ryan Gerard, and Australian Jason Day, all tied at 23 under. The victory represents a remarkable milestone in Scheffler’s career, making him the second-fastest player in terms of days taken to reach 20 PGA Tour wins, the third fastest in terms of events played, and the third youngest to achieve the landmark.

Having first triumphed at the WM Phoenix Open in 2022, Scheffler reached his 20th win 1,442 days later. For context, Tiger Woods reached the same mark in 1,351 days, underscoring the exceptional pace at which Scheffler has ascended through professional golf’s ranks. In terms of appearances, this victory came in his 151st PGA Tour start, compared to Woods’ 95 events and Nicklaus’ 127 events needed to reach the same total. These figures highlight not only Scheffler’s consistency but also the intense competitiveness of the current PGA Tour era.

The American Express event was held at the PGA West Stadium Course in California, and Scheffler delivered a finishing round of six-under 66 to cement his victory. He began the day in pursuit of overnight leader Si-Woo Kim of South Korea, who had carded impressive scores during the earlier rounds. Scheffler, however, showed remarkable composure and precision under pressure, recording seven birdies to establish a clear advantage over the field. Only a double bogey on the 17th hole, when he found the water, prevented him from potentially becoming the first golfer in 16 years to finish a PGA Tour event at 30 under.

Scheffler’s performance at the American Express not only extended his impressive win tally but also earned him a substantial first prize of £1.236 million ($1.656 million). Beyond the financial reward, the victory secured him a lifetime exemption on the PGA Tour, ensuring that he will have access to the circuit’s most prestigious events for the remainder of his career. This guarantee is a testament to his consistent excellence over the past several seasons.

The final leaderboard showcased the depth of American talent, with Andrew Putnam, Matt McCarty, Ryan Gerard, and Jason Day finishing at 23 under. Other notable performers included Si-Woo Kim and Samuel Stevens, who both posted impressive numbers, highlighting the competitiveness of the field. Young American Blade Brown, 18, who had hoped to become the second-youngest PGA Tour winner in history, ended the tournament in joint 18th position at 19 under. Brown had trailed Kim by a single stroke after Saturday’s play but could not maintain momentum in the final round.

Scheffler’s achievement places him among an exclusive group of players who have won 20 PGA Tour events and four majors before turning 30, a distinction shared only with Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. While Woods still holds the joint record for the most PGA Tour victories at 82, along with 15 major titles, and Nicklaus claims the record for the most major wins with 18 and 73 career tour victories, Scheffler’s rapid rise in the modern era underscores his exceptional skill, focus, and consistency.

Financially, Scheffler joins Woods and Rory McIlroy in surpassing the $100 million career earnings mark on the PGA Tour. Although prize money has increased considerably in recent years, making this milestone more achievable in fewer events, Scheffler’s earnings reflect both the quality of his play and his ability to perform at the highest level consistently. McIlroy, with 29 tour wins, has earned $107,981,766 across 273 starts, while Woods amassed $120,999,166 over 378 events.

Scheffler himself described his win at the American Express as a “pretty wild” experience, noting that it marked a strong start to his season. “It has been a great start to my career and I’ve had some nice wins out there,” Scheffler said. “It has been special, and I try not to think about that stuff too much. Going into the season, I was just trying to do the things I needed to do to be prepared to come out and play this week. I’m going to go home, get some rest and kind of rinse and repeat.”

The tournament also highlighted the emerging international talent, with South Korea’s Si-Woo Kim finishing joint sixth despite some struggles in the final round. Kim had earlier held a one-shot advantage over Scheffler, underscoring the fine margins that define competitive professional golf. Other international players, such as Australia’s Jason Day, continued to show that the PGA Tour attracts top talent from across the globe, enhancing the quality and excitement of the tour.

Scheffler’s ability to perform consistently under pressure was particularly evident in the face of challenging course conditions and a deep field of competitors. His combination of strategic course management, precise iron play, and strong putting allowed him to navigate the Stadium Course effectively. While the double bogey on 17 prevented a potential record-setting total, his overall performance reflected maturity and focus beyond his years.

The American Express marks another key chapter in what has already been a historic season for Scheffler. His 20th win reinforces his position as one of the premier golfers of his generation and further cements his legacy within the sport. Analysts and commentators have noted that his pace of success and financial milestones make him a defining figure of contemporary golf, capable of challenging historical benchmarks set by legends like Woods and Nicklaus.

As the PGA Tour progresses into the next events, Scheffler’s form positions him as a clear contender for additional victories and major championship success. Fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if he can continue his meteoric rise, maintain his consistency, and ultimately contend for some of the sport’s most prestigious trophies.
