Sami Zayn defeated CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship on SmackDown in Mexico City on September 11, marking a major title change just a week after Zayn’s previous reign as champion ended after only nine days.
The match saw both men target each other’s injuries throughout — Zayn working over Punk’s knee while Punk attacked Zayn’s cast-covered hand — with the momentum swinging back and forth through a string of near-falls.
The finish turned on outside interference. Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae arrived in support of Zayn, before Kevin Owens appeared looking for payback over a previous incident with Punk — only for Owens to accidentally strike Punk instead. Zayn capitalized immediately, hitting his Helluva Kick for the pin and the title.
Zayn, who had been disrupting other title matches since losing the belt in Chicago, embraced a heel turn as the new champion, playing to the loud chorus of boos from the Mexico City crowd rather than the babyface reaction he’s built his career on.
